Sven Putnis qualified as a UK doctor in 2002. By 2011 he was a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons and had completed 3 years of trauma and orthopaedic training at St George’s Hospital in London, undertaken an AO Foundation Fellowship in Shanghai focusing on complex knee trauma, and completed a year in Sydney working with specialist orthopaedic surgeons.  In 2017 he completed a 6-year specialist training programme in trauma and orthopaedic surgery at the University College London Hospitals rotation, during which he also spent 6 months in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa as a Trauma Fellow.

Specialist training was followed by a prestigious Australian Orthopaedic Association fellowship at Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute focusing solely on knee surgery.

Sven has been a National Health Service Consultant since 2019 with a practice based at Bristol Royal Infirmary, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, and the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust.

Throughout his training, Sven has learnt from many world-renowned knee surgeons and during this time has undertaken research with well over 60 international peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He has built on this and now holds a number of key roles to ensure that patients receive the best and most up to date management of their knee condition:

  • Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of United Kingdom
  • National Institute of Health & Care Research (NIHR) West of England research lead for Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions
  • International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) committee member
  • British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) member
  • Orthopaedic Trauma Society (OTS) member
  • AO Foundation fellow
